Van Hollen, Alsobrooks Push Full Back Pay for Federal Workers

Maryland Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks rejected a Republican proposal for back pay to only certain essential federal workers during the government shutdown.

Senators Van Hollen and Alsobrooks, along with other Democrats, voted against the Shutdown Fairness Act, which would pay federal law enforcement officers, Border Patrol agents, air traffic controllers, and active troops during the shutdown.

"The best way to make sure that federal employees – all federal employees – get paid, and that the American people get the benefits of their services, is to reopen the government and do it now,"

said Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Maryland, during Senate debate.

Democrats are holding out for back pay for all federal employees affected by the shutdown.
