City of Tulsa Winter Weather Preparedness
The City of Tulsa has prepared crews to respond to winter weather starting December 1, 2025, ensuring readiness for early winter storms. The Public Works Department monitors weather forecasts constantly to guarantee quick deployment of resources when snow or ice storms hit.
Snow and Ice Response Operations
- Tulsa’s crews are responsible for clearing snow and ice from major expressways including the Gilcrease Expressway (excluding Turnpike), L.L. Tisdale Expressway, and all arterial streets.
- The city manages 36 specific routes totaling approximately 1,770 lane-miles, comparable to the distance from Tulsa to San Francisco.
- Priority is to make expressways and arterial streets safe and passable as soon as possible, prioritizing routes based on traffic volume.
- After key streets are cleared, crews may treat selected residential streets based on traffic, steepness, and proximity to hospitals or schools.
- Emergency responder routes take precedence to maintain access during storms.
Inclement Weather Shelter
Starting November 17, 2025, Tulsa opened its first Inclement Weather Shelter for adults. The shelter will operate through March, initially offering 50-60 beds, expandable to 125, and up to 250 during extreme conditions. The facility provides sleeping rooms, meals, and meeting spaces in partnership with BeHeard Movement and CREOKs Behavioral Health Services.
Additional Winter Safety Measures
- The city maintains warming stations and engages with area shelter providers to offer support during cold weather.
- Information about temporary shelter policies and emergency overflow shelters can be found on the City of Tulsa website.
City officials emphasize prioritizing arterial streets for emergency access during winter, with a clear escalation plan to residential areas once main routes are safe. This comprehensive preparation aims to keep Tulsa safe and mobile through the winter season.
