Moderate Liberal assumes leadership after party turmoil

A moderate Liberal has stepped in to lead one of the party’s weakest branches after the sudden resignation of its previous leaders. Mark Parton now heads the Canberra Liberals following Leanne Castley and her deputy Jeremy Hanson’s departure on Monday. The move, they said, aims to give the Liberals their best opportunity to govern by 2028.

Ms. Castley had earlier replaced then-Liberal leader Elizabeth Lee after the party’s loss in the 2024 election held in October.

“In the spirit of ensuring a genuine fresh start for the new team, we will not be commenting publicly on the circumstances that have led to this decision,”

she said in a statement issued Monday.

The Canberra Liberals have been outside government for over twenty years and are set to complete 27 years in opposition by the time the 2028 election arrives. Stepping into the deputy position is the more conservative Deborah Morris.

“It's vital that we continue to strengthen the cohesion within our party. By encouraging open dialogue, valuing diverse perspectives, and finding common ground, we can reinforce our shared purpose,”

Parton said in his first statement as leader. The Canberra Liberals have long faced criticism that their members are too conservative for the socially progressive ACT, where they currently have no federal representatives.

Author’s summary:

Mark Parton takes leadership of the Canberra Liberals after internal resignations, aiming to rebuild unity and improve the party’s long-standing position in opposition before 2028.
