Leighton Meester plays a stereotypical LA publicist named Alyssa in the HBO series I Love LA, acting as the boss to Maia, portrayed by Rachel Sennott. While her own experiences with publicists did not mirror the show, other aspects strongly resonated with her.
During a discussion about the show, Meester opened up about her past experiences in toxic workplaces. She related this to the complicated relationship between Maia, who seeks a promotion, and Alyssa, her boss.
“I've been in toxic work environments. I think that a lot of people have experienced that, being around people who sort of... I don't know, just, like, you have a boss that maybe doesn't uplift you, or whatever.”
Co-star Josh Hutcherson expressed surprise when Meester revealed her history with difficult bosses, saying,
“In this industry, that's happened to you?”
Meester responded, "It's shocking," acknowledging the rarity of openly discussing such experiences.
Meester appreciated the opportunity to explore toxic work dynamics within a safe and comedic setting on I Love LA. This freedom enhanced her enjoyment of the role.
“The toxic work environment dynamic was really fun to play with in a safe, comedic environment.”
She added that this environment allowed her to experience “the thrill of the ride” in a new way.
Author's summary: Leighton Meester finds releasing past toxic work experiences creatively freeing as she explores these themes safely in HBO’s comedic series I Love LA.
