ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania shared new details on LeBron James's recovery and imminent return for the Los Angeles Lakers. The 40-year-old superstar forward has not yet played this season as he recovers from right-side sciatica.
James is taking a careful, step-by-step approach as he prepares for what will be his unprecedented 23rd NBA season. Despite his absence, the Lakers have managed to maintain solid performance on the court.
Charania revealed that the next major step in James’s comeback will be a 5-on-5 live workout session.
"LeBron James has been working out individually, and I'm told that the next step for him is 5-on-5 live play," Charania said.
However, James will not participate in the upcoming five-game road trip starting in Atlanta this weekend. It remains unclear when he will engage in live play during road games, possibly with the G League South Bay affiliate or after the Lakers return on November 16.
"So, it's unclear when he will be able to get that live action while the team is on the road, potentially doing it with the G League South Bay team or do the Lakers and LeBron wait for the team to get back on November 16 and then the live play process can begin then," Charania added.
The exact timing for LeBron’s full return to the Lakers lineup remains uncertain as the 5-on-5 phase is yet to be scheduled definitively.
LeBron James is progressing steadily in his sciatica recovery, with a 5-on-5 workout as the next step before rejoining the Lakers in full competitive play.
