Rick Stein, a well-known chef, presenter, and restaurateur, has shared insights about the closure of his only Wiltshire restaurant in Marlborough. The restaurant, opened in 2016 as his sixth establishment in England, featured signature dishes like Dover sole a la meunière and turbot hollandaise.
On October 5, the Marlborough restaurant abruptly closed. In an exclusive interview with the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald, Stein discussed the decision while promoting his new book and upcoming TV appearance.
Stein explained that closing the restaurant was not a choice he wanted to make but was forced by economic difficulties and a decline in customers. He said the hospitality sector is facing broad challenges, which impacted his business significantly.
"We decided to close because there just wasn’t enough business. We’re not going under, but we are having to restructure our business just because of the hard time we’re going through. The whole hospitality industry is suffering. Personally, I think it’s a mixture of the government’s last budget and the quite grim economic time we have been going through."
Known for owning a chain of popular UK restaurants and authoring multiple cookbooks, Stein’s Marlborough venue was a hallmark of his culinary style until recent economic pressures led to its closure.
This closure highlights the severe impact of economic challenges on the hospitality industry, even for well-established chefs like Rick Stein.
