The New Zealand Breakers appeared ready to defeat Adelaide but fell victim to a six-minute scoring drought in the final quarter, resulting in an 83-79 loss in Christchurch.
The Breakers entered the fourth quarter with a two-point lead but managed only two free throws and missed 14 straight field-goal attempts in the first eight minutes of the final period. Bryce Cotton, who had a slow start, nailed a step-back three-pointer to give the 36ers a nine-point advantage, seemingly sealing the victory before Perth visits Adelaide on Sunday.
Despite the fluctuating momentum, the Breakers fought back with five quick points and forced turnovers using a full-court press, closing the gap to two points in the last 90 seconds. Both teams played aggressively, fouling often, but crucial free throws by Zylan Cheatham secured the win for Adelaide with only 14 seconds remaining.
"We fought today and our defence gave us the opportunity and then it comes down to the small things, small details," said Breakers coach Petteri Koponen. "It wasn't our night, but we found a way to come back and have chances."
Jackson-Cartwright missed a critical free throw, while opponent Isaac White scored an important basket late in the game.
Author's summary: A scoring drought in the final quarter cost the Breakers a valuable road win as the 36ers edged out a gritty 83-79 victory in a tightly contested match.
