French Lesbian Literature Takes Center Stage
The Prix Gouincourt, a new literary award, will be presented for the first time next Friday, following the prestigious Prix Goncourt.
The award aims to highlight the growing prominence of French lesbian literature. Its name is a playful nod to the Prix Goncourt, with "gouine" being a slang term for lesbian.
Lauriane Nicol, a 34-year-old founder of the media outlet Lesbien Raisonnable, launched the Prix Gouincourt to celebrate French lesbian novels. A jury of 10 artists and book industry professionals will choose the winning novel.
The Prix Gouincourt is an ironic hat tip to France's most celebrated literary award, the Prix Goncourt.
The award ceremony will take place on November 7, three days after the Prix Goncourt is awarded.
