As students across Canada step out of university classrooms and into a challenging job market, youth with disabilities face bigger hurdles.
Youth employment, including those with and without disabilities, is approximately 54 per cent, the lowest since 1999, excluding peak pandemic years.
“It’s pretty grim out there right now,” said Vanessa Sinclair, director of research and evaluation at the Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work (CCRW).
The CCRW notes that students and recent graduates with disabilities, representing 20 per cent of the country’s youth, experience higher unemployment rates despite increased attendance in post-secondary education.
