“Prizes and Saddlecloths—Penthouse or Balcony” by G. Ryall was published in the print edition of the October 26, 1935, issue of The New Yorker.
JUST before the Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs last week, someone asked Alfred Vanderbilt how much his stable had won this season. He didn’t reach for a memorandum book or suggest that his trainer would know. “Two hundred and seventy-six thousand, eight hundred and seventy-five dollars,” he said, “and that includes the six hundred and twenty-five that Tehani won at Laurel yesterday.”
Of course Vanderbilt undoubtedly will lead the winning owners for the year, but his place on the list would have been unassailable if Discovery had won the Massachusetts Handicap.
