Flooding in Southwest Colorado Forces Evacuations

Heavy rain from Hurricane Priscilla caused flooding in La Plata County, forcing about 390 households to evacuate their homes.

The flooding, which occurred north of Vallecito Reservoir, was triggered by 4 inches of rain in 48 hours, causing creeks to swell and cut off evacuation routes.

“Typically (for) the water gages on Vallecito Creek, high water is under 3,000 cubic feet per second,” said Sarah Jacobson, public information officer. “This morning it was at 6,800 cubic feet per second.”

According to emergency responders, up to 100 homes have been impacted by the flooding, but no deaths or major injuries have been reported.
