In comparison, the average in the European Union is considerably lower – 130 kg/capita per year. Notably, Greece threw away more than 2.09 million tons of food in 2023.
According to the Greek Statistics Authority (ELSTAT), 7% of the population faces moderate or severe food insecurity, highlighting the need to address food waste amidst growing financial strain.
