Dairy farmers are showing an interest in making cheese.
A central Victorian cheesemaker says the best way to help small producers break into export markets is to better understand the opportunities and challenges they face.
"Ultimately, in Australia in particular, they (the federal government) just don't seem interested in smaller markets and businesses,"
said Long Paddock Cheese and Cheese School director Alison Lansley, Castlemaine, commenting on a federal parliamentary inquiry looking at creating sustainable economic growth in rural and regional Australia.
