Examining Saturday's Beaten Favourites
A pair of beaten odds-on favourites mid-program put punters on the back foot on Caulfield Guineas day.
Race 1 – SEN Hcp (1800m, BM80)
The favourite, Mr Verse ($4.20), finished fifth. What happened: Mr Verse was one of the slowest away from his middle gate and he ended up in an awkward spot on the rails near the tail of the field.
- Was unable to improve much off a steady speed but gradually he got to the outside and chased hard the last bit, however was unable to reel in the leaders.
- RV stewards: Mr Verse was slow to begin and shortly after was hampered when Nearing Liberty shifted out.
Race 3 – G2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m)
The favourites, Plymouth ($4ef, finished second), and Whisky On The Hill ($4ef, finished third), jumped OK and after the field left the home straight, they settled down in prominent positions with Plymouth in and Whisky On The Hill in fourth spot close to the rails.
