Jay Lycurgo notes,
“It’s a vital topic”, as he discusses his role as Shy in the film Steve.
Some actors are born for certain roles, and Jay Lycurgo is one such example, bringing to life the character of Shy in Tim Mielants' film Steve, adapted from Max Porter's novella Shy.
Set in a 1990s residential school, the film follows Shy, a furious and fragile teenager, as he navigates a chaotic day, torn between self-destruction and salvation, alongside a group of determined teachers trying to reach him.
Jay Lycurgo's performance is raw, ecstatic, and unguarded, mirroring Cillian Murphy's stoic yet sensitive head teacher, and sharing the screen with notable actors including Emily Watson, Tracey Ullman, and Simbiatu Ajikawo (Lil Simz).
Author's summary: Jay Lycurgo embodies pain and possibility in Steve.
