Native Americans in Nevada Renew Push for Indigenous Peoples' Day

As President Donald Trump's Columbus Day proclamation pledges to "reclaim" the holiday honoring the Italian explorer, Native Americans in Nevada are renewing their call to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day.

"The idea of celebrating Columbus goes back in the United States really to the 300th anniversary of when he sailed back in 1792,"

said Michael Green, a professor of history at UNLV. He notes that Columbus' actions were harmful, particularly to Indigenous people, with some arguing that he was guilty of genocide.

Native Americans in Nevada believe that Indigenous Peoples' Day better reflects their heritage and history, and are pushing for its recognition.
