Gurney Norman, a renowned Appalachian writer, filmmaker, professor, and cultural advocate, has died at the age of 88.
According to his wife, Norman died of natural causes on Sunday. Born in 1937 in Grundy, Virginia, Norman grew up in the southern Appalachian Mountains, splitting his time between his grandparents' homes in Southwest Virginia and Eastern Kentucky.
Norman attended Stuart Robinson School in Letcher County, Kentucky, from 1946 to 1955. He then went on to attend the University of Kentucky, graduating with a degree in journalism and English in 1959.
In 1960, Norman received a Wallace Stegner Fellowship in Creative Writing at Stanford University, where he studied under notable literary figures such as Malcolm Cowley and Frank O’Connor.
Norman's work and legacy will be remembered for their significant contributions to Appalachian literature and culture.
