Gov. Stein announces medical debt milestone, calls on Washington to extend subsidies

Medical Debt Relief Milestone Announced by Gov. Stein

Gov. Josh Stein announced that over $6.5 billion in medical debt has been relieved for more than 2.5 million North Carolinians.

“They’d rather take a loss and just go home to sit and let their back heal or however they’re going to do it,”
said Yolanda Sheppard, a senior citizen from Greenville, highlighting the fear of debt that prevents some from seeking medical care.

Despite this progress, uncertainty surrounds Medicaid due to potential cuts, including a proposed 15% reduction in Medicaid spending by President Trump’s administration.

The Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services notes that these cuts will not immediately impact the debt relief program.
