Celebrating Indigenous People’s Day in OC
Cities, local colleges, and community groups are hosting several events across October celebrating indigenous culture and history, forgoing Christopher Columbus Day.
Orange County community groups, colleges, and cultural institutions will celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day with events that honor Native American history, culture, and resilience.
The area was once inhabited by the Tongva and Acjachemen peoples hundreds of years ago.
The holiday, which falls on the second Monday of October, has been recognized by Gov. Gavin Newsom through proclamations and by President Joe Biden, who issued the first federal proclamation commemorating Indigenous Peoples Day in 2021.
Many cities have opted to replace Columbus Day celebrations with a more complete story of the arrival of Europeans in the Americas.
