Joe Keery recently officiated his friend's wedding dressed as his Stranger Things character, Steve Harrington, wearing the iconic Scoops Ahoy sailor outfit from season three. The wedding was Halloween-themed, and all guests were in costume, which was clarified by Keery to dispel impressions that his outfit was random. He shared that the original costume was lent to him by Amy Parris, the show's costume designer, who has a dozen such outfits. The wedding took place in Simi Valley, California, for his close friend and bandmate Matt Williams and Veronica Capaldi. Veronica proposed the idea of Keery dressing as Steve for the ceremony.
Keery explained that the Scoops Ahoy outfit felt a bit different when worn for the wedding, noting it was tighter than during filming and that the shorts did not fit the same. The costume originally appeared in the third season, where Steve worked at the mall ice cream shop and teamed up with Robin Buckley, played by Maya Hawke, to decode Russian secrets. The Duffer Brothers encouraged Keery to keep the whole look, saying, "It’s a look." Keery also highlighted that the wedding party included people in various costumes such as a friend known as Wes the Rler and even a Shrek character, illustrating the event's costume nature.
Joe Keery has played Steve Harrington since Stranger Things debuted in 2016. He reprised his role in the final season, with the first four episodes released recently and the remaining episodes scheduled for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The actor officiating this costume wedding as Steve Harrington delighted fans and garnered media attention for the unique and playful homage to his popular character.
“Amy Parris, who creates the costumes for the series, lent me the outfit. There are a dozen costumes,” Keery shared.
“Veronica suggested, ‘It’d be fantastic. It’s a costume wedding. You should go as [Steve],’” he recalled.
“It was a tighter fit this time around, gotta be honest. The shorts didn’t fit quite the same.”
Joe Keery uniquely honored his Stranger Things role by officiating a Halloween-themed wedding in Steve Harrington's iconic costume, blending fandom with personal friendship in a memorable celebration.
