The Belleville Senators achieved a milestone on Saturday night by becoming the first American Hockey League team this season to score in Syracuse. They not only scored but secured a 7-4 victory over the Syracuse Crunch.
Syracuse opened the scoring early in the first period when Cooper Flinton put a rebound past Belleville’s goalie Leevi Merilainen just over five minutes into the game. Belleville responded quickly, scoring about three minutes later on the power play. Arthur Kaliyev netted his second goal of the season on a one-timer from the right circle, assisted by Stephen Halliday. Later, Wyatt Bongiovanni added his fourth goal of the season, giving the Sens a 2-1 lead after the first period.
The second period saw a burst of scoring with four goals in just over six minutes. Jakob Pelletier tied the game for Syracuse with a rebound goal early on. However, Belleville quickly regained the lead as Bongiovanni scored his second goal with a high-slot wrist shot past Brandon Halverson. At 4:52 of the second, Xavier Bourgault scored his fourth goal of the season on a power play, restoring Belleville’s two-goal advantage.
