Watching sports has never been easier in general, but for die-hard fans wanting every game of their favorite team, the experience has become frustratingly complex. Despite the surge of sports content online, access remains disrupted by network disputes and blackouts.
Janko Roettgers, through his newsletter Lowpass, highlights the current turmoil where YouTube TV subscribers are unable to watch Monday Night Football due to a carriage dispute between Disney and YouTube TV. This conflict led to ESPN and other Disney channels going dark on the Google-owned streaming platform starting October 30th.
The dispute centers on the fees YouTube TV must pay to carry Disney’s networks. Both companies consider the other's financial demands unreasonable, leading to a blackout that impacts roughly 10 million YouTube TV subscribers.
“Just frustrating. All of it.”
Former NFL star JJ Watt expressed his frustration on X, stating he was ready to give up on following Monday Night Football. Despite some fans signing up for trials on rival services like Hulu Live or Fubo, Watt refused to add another subscription.
“I’m not paying for another streaming subscription,” he posted.
The ongoing disputes between media companies create barriers for sports fans, turning what should be simple viewing into an exhausting challenge.
