The Belleville Senators struggled to score in Utica, losing 3-0 to the Comets in the first game of their weekend series. Both teams created chances early, but Utica drew first blood.
The Comets capitalized on a power play following a swift passing sequence between Seamus Casey and Xavier Parent, who set up Matyas Melovsky for the opening goal, putting Utica ahead 1-0. Belleville was outshot 15-5 and successfully killed three penalties during the period.
Utica quickly extended their lead with a goal from Calen Addison, his first of the season, assisted by Jonathan Gruden and Mikael Diotte, bringing the score to 2-0. Later, former Senator Angus Crookshank scored his fourth goal of the season after a scramble at the net, with assists from Ethan Edwards and Ryan Schmelzer, making it 3-0.
Belleville created some scoring opportunities in the final period but failed to convert. The game ended with a 3-0 victory for Utica.
Belleville and Utica will face off again soon. The Senators return home to Adirondack Bank Center next Friday to continue their three-game New York State road trip.
