Former Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers, who served as the organisation’s leader from 2009 to 2024, was found dead at his Brisbane residence. He was 57 years old.
Emergency services responded to a call reporting a sudden death at Mount Ommaney, in Brisbane’s south-west, around 9:50 a.m. on Monday. Authorities stated that the death is not being treated as suspicious.
“Police investigations in relation to this matter are ongoing,” a spokesperson said.
Leavers had a notable career spanning more than three decades in law enforcement and police representation. After leaving the union in 2024, he was appointed Queensland’s first Cross-Border Commissioner, focusing on improving cooperation and support for border communities.
Premier David Crisafulli said Leavers “earned the respect of Queenslanders for saying it how it was, and always standing up for the police service he loved.”
“He was dedicated, principled and driven to make a difference for this state,” Crisafulli said. “Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some of our state’s most tragic and defining events.”
The Police Federation of Australia described Leavers as a long-serving and respected figure within the policing community, highlighting his commitment over more than thirty years of service.
Ian Leavers, a respected police leader who championed officers' voices for over a decade, is remembered for his integrity, leadership, and service to Queensland.
