How 'I Love LA' Star Josh Hutcherson Set His Boyfriend Character Apart: Didn't Want to 'Just Be the Square'

How Josh Hutcherson Shaped His Character in "I Love LA"

Josh Hutcherson joined Rachel Sennott’s HBO comedy I Love LA late, stepping in after the original pilot was filmed. Despite this, he had ample opportunity to develop his role as Dylan, the long-term live-in boyfriend of Sennott’s character, Maia, collaborating closely with Sennott and co-showrunner Emma Barrie.

“We very quickly all got on the same page, which was we didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy,” Hutcherson told TheWrap. “We wanted to find some textures to him that felt funny and dynamic and different, rather than something that we’ve seen before.”

As they refined Dylan’s character, which was initially portrayed by Miles Robbins in the pilot, the team explored his core identity, motivations, and reasons for being with Maia. Hutcherson described this process as enriching the character well beyond the script.

Character Development Approach

Through this creative process, Dylan emerged as a multi-dimensional, engaging character who stands apart from typical supporting roles.

Summary: Josh Hutcherson collaborated closely to transform Dylan in "I Love LA" from a typical supporting role into a humorous, dynamic character with depth and unique traits.
