Boston Celtics guard Anfernee Simons values the chance to demonstrate his growth to his former mentor CJ McCollum—the player who once helped shape his game. Simons took an unconventional path to the NBA. After completing high school, instead of attending college, he chose to train for a year at IMG Academy in Florida. This decision kept him out of the spotlight and added a sense of intrigue before he was selected 24th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2018 NBA Draft.
In Portland, Simons entered a backcourt led by Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum—two players who became instrumental mentors early in his career. Reflecting before Wednesday night’s matchup against McCollum’s Washington Wizards at TD Garden, the seven-year veteran spoke about the lessons he learned from CJ’s approach and balance on the court.
"As much as everybody talks about my mentorship with Dame, CJ is also a big part of my development, especially as a young player," said Simons. "Just giving that kind of balance of both play styles, his shiftiness and ability to get to his spots, and his craftiness around the rim—those are things I took most from CJ."
"He's helped me tremendously throughout my career: how to play even when he might not be the most athletic or the fastest, and still be effective at the same time. I credit him a lot, as well as Dame."
Now a seasoned player, Simons continues to apply the lessons learned from his two mentors, combining their influences into his distinct style on the court.
