Sigourney Weaver, known for her roles in Aliens and Avatar, is set to join the Star Wars universe with the 2026 release of The Mandalorian and Grogu. With three major franchises already to her name—Ghostbusters, Alien, and Avatar—this marks her fourth.
Weaver admitted she did not plan to join the Star Wars franchise. In an interview with Empire, she said:
“It was not my intention to find a fourth franchise. I didn’t ever imagine that I would enter the Star Wars world.”
Weaver explained that the script for The Mandalorian and Grogu changed her perspective. She emphasized:
“It’s always the script. With The Mandalorian and Grogu, I didn’t ever imagine entering the Star Wars world, but what’s interesting now is that they’re no longer trying to do the Star Wars to end all Star Wars. They’re letting the universe exist and telling really interesting stories within that.”
In recent years, Star Wars has struggled to find its footing following mixed reactions to films like Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi. Weaver suggests this struggle came from efforts to create “the Star Wars to end all Star Wars.” Now, the franchise is exploring diverse stories within its universe.
Her hopeful view reflects a fresh creative approach, allowing the Star Wars world to evolve naturally rather than focusing on a single defining saga.
Sigourney Weaver's upcoming role marks a new chapter for Star Wars, highlighting the franchise's shift to diverse storytelling beyond a singular defining saga.
