The National Capital Commission (NCC) has confirmed its readiness for the warmer and wetter winter season forecasted for the Rideau Canal Skateway.
Ottawa is expecting between five and fifteen centimeters of snow on Sunday, marking the first official snowfall of the season. However, the snow may not last long, as the city normally sees its first flakes in late October. This delayed start might foreshadow an unusual winter ahead.
The Farmer’s Almanac 2025–2026 predicts that southern Quebec, including Ottawa, will experience more precipitation overall, but less of it will be snow. Rain and mixed precipitation could reduce total snowfall amounts.
Environment Canada expects temperatures slightly above normal for this time of year. Still, residents should prepare for recurring cold spells through December and early January.
Unpredictable winter conditions are increasingly affecting popular seasonal events like Winterlude and the Rideau Canal Skateway. Despite the challenges, the NCC emphasizes its commitment to ensure the skateway remains open and safe.
“Every year, we work diligently under challenging conditions to produce enough high-quality ice that is suitable and safe for mass use,” said Maryam El-Akhrass, spokesperson for the NCC.
The commission assures that it is fully equipped to respond to whatever winter conditions arise, maintaining its tradition of opening the world’s largest skating rink for residents and visitors.
