Large Fire Displaces Over 200 in Amherst, Affecting Many UMass Students

In Amherst, Massachusetts, a major fire on Friday night displaced more than 200 people after engulfing an apartment complex used for off-campus housing by University of Massachusetts students. Firefighters from across western Massachusetts continue to battle the three-alarm blaze.

Details of the Fire

The fire destroyed a building at 57 Olympia Drive, near the UMass campus, as well as a nearby four-story building under construction. Both structures were part of Olympia Place, a private apartment complex housing many students.

Response and Impact

Despite the scale of the fire, town and school officials confirmed no injuries have been reported. The Amherst Fire Department described the incident as “one of the largest fires our community has seen.”

“One four story building that was under construction has collapsed and other buildings nearby are still burning, and have partially collapsed. The fire attack has been hampered by poor water pressure in the area.”

The department added on social media:

“Crews worked tirelessly through the night — with help from our mutual aid partners — to stop the spread and protect lives.”

Investigation

The cause of the fire remains under investigation as emergency teams continue their efforts.

Summary: A massive fire in Amherst displaced over 200 people, including many UMass students, with firefighters battling difficult conditions to contain one of the largest fires the community has faced.
