Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper delivered a sharp message following their 3-2 defeat to Nathan MacKinnon’s Colorado Avalanche in the 2025-26 NHL season.
Despite a strong start in the first period, the Lightning lost momentum and allowed the Avalanche to come back and secure the win, ending Tampa Bay’s five-game winning streak. This was the Lightning's first loss since October 23.
“It was good for a bit, and then we got in our own way. And when we get in our own way, it’s usually going to be tough for us,” Cooper said, as reported by NHL.com.
“It was unfortunate that [there were] untimely penalties. We took those tonight, but they were a better team for periods two and three. So, that was a little disappointing.”
While the loss at Denver was a setback, the Avalanche currently lead the NHL standings with 21 points after 14 games. Meanwhile, the Lightning have 14 points, placing them fifth in the Atlantic Division.
Summary: Jon Cooper emphasized the need for focus and discipline after the Lightning's first loss in weeks, highlighting costly penalties and the strong performance of the Avalanche. Despite the setback, Tampa Bay remains competitive in their division.
