Karrueche Tran immersed herself in the world of Hip-Hop to play a convincing artist in Lifetime’s new film Terry McMillan Presents: Preach, Pray, Love, which premiered on November 8. She took inspiration from Brooklyn rapper Lola Brooke to embody the character Charlisa “Charlie” Jones, a platinum-selling artist with a difficult past and a sharp tongue.
Tran admitted her challenges with the role, saying,
“I’m not musically inclined in any way. But it was a great challenge. I studied a rapper named Lola Brooke, I prepared myself, and I did it. I think I did a pretty decent job!”
The film follows Charlie’s journey after prison as she completes community service under the supervision of Pastor Kyrus Owens, portrayed by Mark J.P. Their clashing worlds — her street persona and his spiritual mission — create the emotional core of the story.
Reflecting on her experience, Tran shared,
“I learned that I can do anything I put my mind to. I was anxious because I wanted to do the character justice — but once I focused, I realized you can do anything when you really go for it.”
The film is directed by Terry McMillan, known for acclaimed works such as Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.
Author's Summary: Karrueche Tran embraced a daring transformation by studying Lola Brooke, conquering self-doubt and delivering a powerful portrayal of a complex Hip-Hop artist inspired by real-life grit.
