LSU’s offense has faced continuing difficulties, leading to quarterback Garrett Nussmeier being replaced by Michael Van Buren during the matchup against Alabama.
Van Buren, a sophomore who transferred from Mississippi State earlier this year, entered the game as relief for Nussmeier in the second quarter.
Before leaving the field, Nussmeier completed 18 of 21 passes for 121 yards, averaging 5.8 yards per attempt. At the time of the substitution, LSU trailed Alabama 17–6.
This marks the second consecutive game in which Nussmeier was benched for Van Buren, following a similar situation during LSU’s heavy loss to Texas A&M.
“Van Buren transferred in from Mississippi State this offseason.”
It remains unclear whether the coaching staff plans to keep Nussmeier on the bench for future games or return him to the starting lineup.
