Boca Raton officials are intensifying their efforts to attract New Yorkers and their businesses after Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, secured a decisive victory in the New York City mayoral race.
Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, defeated his closest challenger, former Governor Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing in the primary. With this win, Mamdani becomes the first Muslim and first Asian American to serve as mayor of the nation’s largest city. His campaign was marked by internal party conflicts and debates over his progressive policies and his previous remarks about Israel and the NYPD.
Mayor Scott Singer and other Boca Raton officials had already been encouraging New Yorkers to move to Florida, anticipating a Mamdani victory. They view his administration’s socialist platform as an opportunity to pitch Boca Raton’s pro-business environment as an appealing alternative.
Following Mamdani’s win, Singer reinforced his invitation to relocate south. The day after the election, he posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Expected to be a busy day. Many companies have already made the move. If you’re thinking about it now, we can help!”
He expanded on this message during an appearance on The Benny Johnson Show, a conservative political commentary program hosted by Benny Johnson, where he stated:
“Come to Florida. We’re here to celebrate and propel business, not overregulate it and defeat it.”
Boca Raton is capitalizing on New York’s political shift after Mamdani’s election by renewing its efforts to attract residents and businesses seeking a more market-friendly environment.
