Monte Cristo, a Victorian-era manor in the NSW town of Junee, 470 km southwest of Sydney, is now on the market. Known as Australia's most haunted house, it has drawn both curiosity and fear for its dark legends spanning over 140 years.
The mansion, one of the Riverina region’s most recognized estates, is said to be home to up to ten ghosts. Over the years, Monte Cristo has operated as a museum and popular tourist attraction, offering guided tours and overnight stays for visitors seeking paranormal experiences.
"I've had a hand on my shoulder," said Olive Ryan, who lived in the homestead for 50 years. "I've had my name called when I've been here by myself. It's nothing to hear footsteps on the balcony and you go out and there's no one there."
Ryan recalled sensing the presence of the home’s original owners, Christopher and Elizabeth Crawley, who are believed to have haunted Monte Cristo since their deaths in 1910 and 1933.
Her son, Lawrence, who grew up in the mansion, described always feeling as though unseen eyes followed him through the rooms and long corridors.
The grand double-storey residence at 1 Homestead Lane retains original fireplaces, decorative features, and even a ballroom that hints at its opulent past.
