‘It’s a reality’: Living in the shadow of younger brother Jimmy Barnes

John Swan, better known as Swanee, 73, has spoken candidly about his life, past hardships, and family — including his famous younger brother, Jimmy Barnes. The musician shared how their paths intertwined and what it meant to live alongside such a renowned sibling.

“Not many people touch on it, and I think they're just polite,” he said.

Despite the public’s fascination with any supposed rivalry, Swan insists that there was none. He remained proud of his family and unaffected by comparisons or expectations.

“I didn't really give a stuff, because I got offered the gig before he did,” he said.

At one point, Swanee continued drumming for his band simply because he was earning $25 a week and couldn’t afford to give that up. He recalled his amazement upon first hearing Ian Moss and Steve Prestwich play together, describing the moment vividly.

“My jaw just about hit the floor when I heard Mossy and Steve Prestwich,” he remembered.

Six months after Cold Chisel formed, Swanee joined briefly to sing alongside Jimmy but soon decided to move on when he realized the group had found its own rhythm without him.

“I was smart enough to realise that this band doesn't need me,” he said.

Swanee later established a strong solo career and collaborated with notable acts. He eventually joined The Party Boys, taking over for Angry Anderson, and achieved a number-one hit with the band.
