On October 30, 2025, negotiators from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) met with Canada Post and federal mediators for the first time since October 3, aiming to revive stalled negotiations. Further discussions are planned in the coming days, according to a CUPW news release.
CUPW members maintain rotating strikes, with those in the Quebec Region intensifying their protest by refusing to process or deliver unaddressed flyers, also known as Neighbourhood Mail.
“We all have a part to play in our fight for public services, good jobs and a sustainable public post office. The negotiators thank all members for their continued support,” said Jan Simpson, CUPW National President.
Joël Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement, responsible for Canada Post, has expressed readiness to approve significant job reductions. Experts suggest that up to 10,000 jobs could be eliminated as part of restructuring efforts at the Crown Corporation.
This issue was recently addressed by the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates, which heard testimony from Minister Lightbound.
Canada Post initiates layoffs amid mediation attempts with CUPW, while union members continue protests and government signals possible large-scale job cuts.
