Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia and his wife, Kayla, revealed the heartbreaking reason for his absence during the World Series. The couple shared on Instagram that they are grieving the loss of their baby daughter, Sterling Sol Vesia.
“Our little angel, we love you forever and you’re with us always,” the message read. “Our beautiful daughter went to heaven Sunday, October 26. There are no words to describe the pain we’re going through, but we hold her in our hearts and cherish every second we had with her.”
Vesia, 29, was away from the team since the beginning of the World Series. In late October, the Dodgers described his absence as related to a “deeply personal family matter.” The couple had previously announced in April that they were expecting a child.
“Thank you to the Dodgers for their understanding and support during this time,” they wrote. “Our baseball family showed up for us and we wouldn’t be able to do this without them.”
The message continued with gratitude toward fans and organizations who offered their sympathy and encouragement.
“Thank you Dodger Nation, Blue Jays organization, and all baseball fans for your love and support,” they added. “We have seen all your messages, comments, and posts. It’s brought us so much comfort.”
Vesia did not appear in any World Series games after pitching in seven postseason contests earlier.
The Vesias shared their grief over the loss of their infant daughter, expressing deep pain but gratitude toward the Dodgers, fans, and baseball community for their support.
