API-IPA deplores sudden dismissal of journalist for question at press conference

API-IPA Condemns Dismissal of Journalist After Press Conference Question

The International Press Association (API-IPA) has voiced “deep concern” over the abrupt firing of journalist Gabriele Nunziati, which followed a question he posed during the European Commission’s press conference on 13 October 2025.

Press Freedom Under Threat

“Journalists ask difficult and uncomfortable questions. It is also one of the fundamental pillars of press freedom,” said Dafydd ab Iago, API-IPA president. He added, “Punishing a journalist for doing his job during the European Commission’s daily press conference sends a chilling message to all correspondents in Brussels and Europe.”

Details of the Incident

Nunziati was dismissed from his newspaper shortly after directing a question regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict to Paula Pinho, the European Commission’s chief spokesperson, and Anouar El Anouni, spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Response from EU Spokesperson

Paula Pinho responded, “Gabriel, it is certainly an interesting question on which I have no comment to make at this stage.”

The journalist’s employer later described Nunziati’s question as technically incorrect and inappropriate.

Author’s Summary

This case highlights the tensions between journalistic inquiry and institutional responses, raising concerns about press freedom and accountability within European media environments.
