San Francisco's Mission District is grieving after a cherished bodega cat named KitKat was reportedly struck and killed by a Waymo autonomous taxi. The accident has sparked outrage in the community and renewed concerns about the safety of driverless vehicles.
KitKat, a nine-year-old tabby with green eyes, belonged to Mike Zeidan, the owner of Randa's Market on 16th Street. Locals often referred to him as the "Mayor of 16th Street" for his friendly and sociable nature. Now, the spot where KitKat once lounged is covered with candles, marigolds, and a handwritten card reading: “Kill a Waymo, save a cat.”
“The Waymo did not slow down, swerve, or even try to avoid the cat in any way,” an anonymous complaint to the city stated. “Waymos should not be on the street if they can't spot small animals in the dark.”
Waymo confirmed that one of its self-driving vehicles encountered a cat at the scene but did not provide further details. City reports indicate the incident occurred at 12:51 a.m., with the cat sitting near the sidewalk beside the transit lane.
