Starting today, cloud streaming is officially available on the PlayStation Portal, allowing users to play games on the handheld device without being connected to a PS5 console.
Two years after its initial release and following a year-long beta phase, the PlayStation Plus handheld can now operate independently of a PS5. This update requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, enabling cloud gaming directly on the device.
The latest system update advances the PlayStation Portal towards being a genuine successor to Sony’s previous handheld consoles, such as the PSP and PS Vita, which could play games offline without internet connection.
According to the official PlayStation blog, cloud streaming on the PS Portal will be available to all compatible subscribers shortly after the beta concluded. This marks a significant improvement, as the device no longer needs to be tethered to a PS5 or require any complex setup.
"It's a breath of fresh air for the Portal, which, when it launched back in 2023, garnered negative reviews for its limited power and portability."
At launch, the PS Portal’s functionality was limited because it could only play games by streaming from a PS5, a feature already accessible on other devices like smartphones. This restriction prevented it from being a standalone console and made it feel more like an accessory.
The PlayStation Portal now supports untethered cloud gaming with a Premium subscription, overcoming earlier criticisms and moving closer to the independence and convenience of previous Sony handhelds.
This update finally transforms the PS Portal from a restricted accessory into a more versatile handheld, realizing its potential as a worthy PlayStation handheld successor.
