The PlayStation Portal is finally gaining access to cloud gaming, but users must have a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription to take advantage of it.
The PlayStation Portal, Sony’s handheld console, has remained a relatively niche device since launch. To date, only about 3% of PlayStation 5 owners have purchased one. Sony now aims to revive interest by integrating cloud gaming functionality.
The success of the Steam Deck spurred many companies into creating their own portable gaming systems. Its appeal lay in the freedom to play virtually anywhere — on a plane, in a café, or even during a commute.
Earlier this week, Sony announced that PlayStation Portal users can now stream certain digital PlayStation 5 titles through the cloud. The experience is available for “select digital PS5 games from their own library” and no longer requires a direct connection to the console.
“Select digital PS5 games from their own library” are accessible through cloud streaming with PlayStation Plus.
Despite the positive improvement, access to cloud gaming is limited to subscribers of PlayStation Plus Premium, Sony’s highest subscription tier. The plan costs $17.99 per month or $159.99 annually.
For existing Premium members, the upgrade is a welcome enhancement that makes the PlayStation Portal more practical and independent — transforming it from a remote screen into a versatile handheld gaming platform.
Sony expands the PlayStation Portal’s capabilities with cloud gaming, but locks the feature behind a costly PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
