Doha: The Chair of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Roslyn Morauta, praised Qatar as a reliable partner in the global campaign against infectious diseases. She emphasized that Qatar’s influence in global health financing continues to grow.
Speaking to The Peninsula during the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Morauta described the Global Fund as a collaborative framework bringing together governments, private foundations, and civil society to achieve measurable health progress in developing countries.
“The Global Fund is not like any other multilateral organisation,” Morauta said. “It is built on a true public-private partnership model where both donors and implementers have equal say. Those who receive funding have as much voice as those who give it.”
Since its inception in 2002, the Fund has distributed over $70 billion to low- and middle-income nations. These investments have saved more than 70 million lives and reduced deaths from AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria by 63 percent.
Morauta noted that Qatar became a donor to the Fund in 2016 and has since increased its financial contributions. Although Qatar currently holds a non-voting donor seat on the Global Fund Board, she expressed optimism that Doha’s active participation would soon lead to a full voting position.
Roslyn Morauta underscored Qatar’s growing contribution to global health through the Global Fund, highlighting its evolving leadership and commitment to global disease eradication.
