Two prisoners have absconded after being mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth in south-west London. Among them is Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a 24-year-old Algerian convicted sex offender, who was set free on October 29. The Metropolitan Police were only informed about his escape six days later.
The other prisoner, Billy Smith, 35, was released on the same day he was convicted of fraud, on Monday. Both errors have raised serious concerns about the management of the prison.
Nigel Farage, Reform UK leader, described the situation as “a total farce” and blamed Labour for allowing another dangerous criminal to escape.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called the incident “a shambles,” highlighting the failures in prison oversight.
This release coincided shortly after the case of Hadush Kebatu, another migrant sex offender, was publicized following his release from HMP Chelmsford.
The release of two offenders from HMP Wandsworth in error has exposed critical flaws in prison procedures and communication, prompting broad criticism from political figures.
Author’s note: This incident reveals serious flaws in prisoner management, risking public safety and undermining trust in the justice system.
