Jennifer Lawrence has collaborated with Wolfgang Tillmans, Elizabeth Peyton, and Philippe Parreno to create intimate portraits for W Magazine. This new portrait series features the actor depicted through distinct artistic styles by each artist.
In the interview for the Art Issue of W Magazine, Lawrence admitted she isn’t skilled at drawing, except for a simple horse head sketch she makes with childlike ease. Since 2006, the magazine has paired cultural icons with contemporary artists, including Mickalene Thomas photographing Cardi B, Barbara Kruger adding text to a nude Kim Kardashian, and George Clooney appearing in Yayoi Kusama’s polka dot world.
“We wanted to work with artists who approached portraiture in different ways and who worked in different mediums. Of course, it was also important that we connected to them on a personal level,” said Sara Moonves, editor in chief at W Magazine, via email. “Each of them approached the collaboration differently, but with great commitment and care.”
The series presents three unique covers, each reflecting a different artistic impression of the 35-year-old actor.
Elizabeth Peyton offers her intimate interpretation through portraiture, bringing a personal and emotional dimension to Lawrence’s image.
Wolfgang Tillmans brings a photographic perspective that captures nuanced facets of Lawrence’s personality and presence.
Philippe Parreno contributes his distinct artistic style, rounding out the varied portrayals within this collaborative effort.
