Millions of Australians along the eastern coast are preparing for severe storms and heavy rainfall expected this weekend. After a turbulent start to the storm season, residents are advised to stay alert for further severe weather conditions.
Sydney may experience late thunderstorms and strong winds on both Friday and Saturday, following warmer daytime temperatures. The Bureau of Meteorology warns that much of southeastern Australia faces a series of unsettled days as a cold front develops.
“Today (Friday) we are looking at the possibility of thunderstorms all the way from southern Victoria across to South Australia and up into northern parts of NSW,” said Bureau forecaster Jonathon Howe.
Howe added that northern Victoria and northwestern New South Wales could face damaging wind gusts by Friday afternoon. Thunderstorms are also possible in major cities including Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, and Sydney.
“Severe thunderstorms are possible through the day for the northwestern slopes of NSW, into southern inland Queensland and a large swath across Central Australia,” he said. “For these areas, we could see damaging wind gusts with thunderstorms as we head into Saturday.”
Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and large hailstones are also expected to impact areas from Wollongong through Sydney, Newcastle, the Hunter Region, the Mid North Coast, and into inland Queensland.
Weather authorities warn southeastern Australia to prepare for severe storms, heavy rain, and strong winds as a cold front moves across the region this weekend.
