Edie Falco, recognized for her Emmy-winning performances in The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie, expressed interest in portraying a female superhero, describing it as an exciting new challenge.
“Never have I said I can’t do that,” Falco said. “You sort of find a way you can go and see, because you’re able to know you have to stop before it is dangerous. And I’ve been in therapy for 7,000 years.”
Falco thrives on playing layered, complicated women, finding less interesting roles to be less engaging. “I look for those [complicated characters]. That’s what makes this exciting. To play someone with a less complicated life is less interesting,” she shared.
At 62, Falco feels fortunate for the variety of strong female roles she has portrayed. She believes the increasing complexity of female characters has matched her career trajectory. “I’ve been very lucky that kind of since I started working, female characters are getting more interesting and complicated, I feel like I’m riding this wave of really interesting and complicated female characters.”
“I imagine if you’re only ever playing young, beautiful, sexy women, it’s going to get harder as you get older,” she added, reflecting on her diverse casting opportunities early on.
Looking ahead, Falco is also intrigued by the idea of playing a political figure. “Maybe I can get something out of my system,” she joked, signaling a willingness to explore new types of roles.
Summary: Edie Falco seeks new challenges by aiming to play a female superhero, valuing complex characters and embracing diverse roles throughout her expanding career.
