RSL Victoria urges people across the community to purchase a red poppy in the days leading up to Remembrance Day. The date — Monday, 11 November 2024 — marks the anniversary of the Armistice that brought an end to fighting with Germany in World War I in 1918.
Each year, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, millions around the world pause to remember those who served and sacrificed. Local services will take place in Ararat, Willaura, and Lake Bolac, beginning at 11 a.m. in each town.
“The poppy is known as the Flower of Remembrance, as they were among the first to bloom on the battlefields of northern France and Belgium after the war.”
Australia officially adopted the red poppy as a national emblem in 1921 to both honor the fallen and support the living veterans and their families.
RSL Victoria invites communities to honor Remembrance Day by wearing a red poppy, a symbol of memory and hope, and attending commemorative services across Ararat, Willaura, and Lake Bolac.
