The Roadrunners are marking their 15th season of football in 2025. As one of the newer FBS programs and in their third year in the American Conference, UTSA began its football journey from scratch. After a practice year in 2010, the team played its first season as an FCS Independent in 2011 before joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2012.
UTSA moved to Conference USA in 2013 and became a full FBS member starting with the 2014 season. They set modern NCAA startup program records in 2011 by drawing 56,743 fans to their inaugural game against Northeastern State and averaging 35,521 fans for six home games that year.
The Roadrunners made their first postseason appearance in the 2016 New Mexico Bowl during their sixth season. The following year, they earned their first win against a Big 12 team, defeating Baylor 17-10.
UTSA repeated as league champions with a 48-27 win over North Texas, making their third consecutive bowl appearance and ending the season with an 11-3 record.
