Hydro One selects AtkinsRéalis to expand key substation to power Toronto from new Darlington SMRs

Hydro One Selects AtkinsRéalis for Bowmanville Substation Expansion

AtkinsRéalis Group Inc. (TSX: ATRL), a global engineering and nuclear company, has been chosen by Hydro One Networks Inc., an Ontario-based utility with nearly 10,000 employees, for a multi-year Owner’s Engineer role. This mandate involves expanding the Bowmanville Switching Station, located opposite the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.

The substation expansion will support the grid connection of four planned Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) at the nearby Darlington New Nuclear Project site.

Significance of the Project

“Delivering nation-building energy projects in Canada and around the world has been a hallmark of our work in the Power & Renewables sector for decades,” said Ian L. Edwards, President and CEO of AtkinsRéalis.
“Our sector has been involved in marquee projects globally, supported by our centre of excellence in Canada. AtkinsRéalis is perfectly suited to deliver work on this substation, which is a critical link in supplying electricity from the Darlington New Nuclear Project to the people of southern Ontario, including Toronto.”

The project responds to the urgent need for increased electricity in southern Ontario, where rising population and factors like the introduction of electrified rail transport are driving up power demand.

Project Impact

This expansion is a key step in strengthening the region's power infrastructure in line with future energy projects.

Author's Summary

AtkinsRéalis has been tasked with expanding a crucial Ontario substation to connect upcoming SMRs, addressing the region’s increasing electricity needs driven by growth and electrification initiatives.
