Liberal senator Sarah Henderson expressed uncertainty about the Coalition's ability to improve under Sussan Ley's leadership. As party members prepare to finalize their stance on net-zero emissions targets, Henderson voiced concerns following weeks of internal conflict and intensified leadership speculation.
Former frontbencher Henderson admitted she could no longer support the current party direction ahead of a crucial party room meeting. She remarked on Sky News:
“I do have to say really honestly, I do think Sussan is losing support. But I do believe in miracles.”
When asked if the party could recover with Ley in charge, Henderson paused, then reiterated her inability to back the status quo.
“I'm not in the business of throwing anyone under the bus, I'm stating the bleeding obvious, we are in a dire situation. The infighting has been terrible and I'm terribly sorry about what's been going on in the Liberal Party.”
Henderson, who lost her shadow cabinet position after Ley assumed leadership, nonetheless praised Ley for initiating important meetings aimed at clarifying energy and climate policies.
“The series of meetings called by the opposition leader is a significant step forward in deciding a policy position on energy and climate.”
Sarah Henderson highlights critical challenges within the Liberal Party under Sussan Ley, acknowledging internal struggles while hoping for recovery through recent policy discussions.
